ARD Programs
Annual King Salmon Derby
ARD partnered with Angoon Trading Co. and other local businesses in the region to host a local king salmon derby for the residents of Angoon. In 2006, the first year of the derby, ARD was able to sign up 38 residents and offered only a handful of prizes. By its 5th year, the derby had 102 entrants, comprised of local residents and visitors, with 49 fish turned in and 25 sponsors. The derby brings the community together and offers members a chance to show off their skills. (For a complete list of derby winners, sponsors, prizes, rules and regulations, click here.)
Pick.Click.Give.
As a way to get our name and mission to a broader audience, ARD enrolled in the Pick.Give. Give. PFD donation program. We participated in 2009 and will do so again in 2010. We appreciate all the donations we've received through this benefficial program. We are hoping this year brings in even more donations than last year. Please do your part and donate a portion of your PFD.
AMSEA
ARD was able to work with AMSEA and the students in the community to train over over students in cold water safety. Elementary and middle/high school students were able to participate in a in-class water safety training course. Select students were then able to don cold water immersion suits (gumby suits) and practice some cold water safety drills in the water near the float plane dock in Angoon. Local search and rescue and ETT volunteers were there to ensure student safety.
Home Fire Safety Program
ARD was award an Injury Prevention grant from SEARHC (Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium for our program which made sure all the houses in the community was equipped with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The program was open to all community members and we are proud to say over 75% of the community participated. In addition to fire safety detectors being installed, individual fire escape plans were created and community members were educated about the hazards of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Alaska Marketplace
In October 2008, ARD was invited to participate in the 3rd Annual Alaska Marketplace Competition for the development of Recycled Production, a community recycling programs that focused on harnessing renewable energy to operate recycling machinery. the competition was open to all that applied, but only a select few were asked to present their ideas in Anchorage. Although ARD was not selected as a final winner, our organization received positive feedback from experts in the industry who thought our concept was progressive and well planned.
Alternative Energy Development Plan and Recycling Program
Admiralty Research and Development's central office is located on the banks of Kootznoowoo Inlet which has an impressive amount of tidal action. Admiralty Research and Development would like to harness that energy for practical applications in Angoon as well as serve as a model to other rural communities looking for alternatives to conventional energy production and consumption. In addition to our alternative energy development plan is to study and develop small scale wind energy sources for applications in Angoon. Technical assistance is needed for data collection and research in order to complete feasibility studies.
Our recycling program focuses on developing a close loop recycling center that relies on renewable energy to operate the facility's equipment. In our approach to recycling, recyclables will be collected and used for end-use production in a green facility. Our recycling program will help clean up our community, provide jobs and improve our environment.
Businesses and individuals residing outside of Alaska can also make an online donation to help support our efforts!
